Decoding the Relationship between Smell and Taste

The fragrance is a sensuous art form. The smell can evoke emotions, memories and taste buds. The concept of taste and smell go hand in hand when we learn about fragrance making. By taste, we actually mean by the smell of the food. When a dish first arrives at your table, the first thing one notices is the smell. This smell, in turn, helps you make up your mind on whether or not it will taste good.

How does that happen? Well, the 400 types of receptors inside our nose can detect more than a trillion different odours. Thus, generating harmony between smell and taste. These smell receptors then evoke our taste buds and create a feeling of like or dislike. These taste and smell receptors link our thoughts back to our memories which makes food and smell a huge part of our memory storage. With a blocked nose, we are normally unable to feel the real taste of a food item. It means that we are strongly influenced by smells. Ever wonder how you always remember the smell of your grandma’s food even when you are away from home? These little memories get embedded in our brains because we are strongly influenced by smells.

In the fragrance industry, smell and taste are two sides of the same coin. To learn more about notes, we need to understand how important the link between smell and taste is. Learning and remembering different notes is easier when you can link up your experiences and memories with them. Thus, when we dive into our next topic of Training the nose, just remember the strong influence of smells in our life.
